The number of refugees from Venezuela due to the ongoing crisis in the country can reach 5 million people by the end of 2019, assuming that about 5,000 people flee the country every day. This statement was made on Friday by US Special Representative for Venezuela Elliott Abrams at a briefing for journalists at the State Department.
“This number is the result of mathematical extrapolation. Now there are more movements in the Venezuelan-Colombian border. Now we can talk about 5 thousand refugees a day, heading to Colombia. You can calculate: this number will reach 5 million by the end of the calendar year 2019, ”he explained.
Venezuela has experienced an acute social and economic crisis over the past few years. In 2018, according to estimates by the parliamentary finance committee, inflation in the country was 1.7 million percent. The Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Association considered the past year “the worst in the history of all spheres of production” of the republic.
